I like the metaphor of 'difficult pills to swallow' - its certainly true for me, and I'm sure it's true for others too.
The five pills in my facebook post are:
~admitting you are not ok
~learning to accept change
~asking for help
~allowing yourself to feel your emotions
~removing toxic people, habits and belief systems.
As these are as difficult for children as they are for adults, this is why I would like to make a difference for them in the following areas:
Outpatient facilities
Attending hospital frequently is something that is made even more difficult for children as the activities in the waiting rooms are usually coloured plastic and aimed at toddlers. Waiting can be a worrying time. I have seen it all - huge painted pierot clowns (not child friendly), brightly coloured toddler toys and dog eared baby books. Play therapists are on site sometimes, but there is little for children aged over 5. This can make a difficult experience feel even more alienating as you feel as though you don't fit in there.

Emotional support. As support is not currently offered to children to help them cope with the emotional aspects of coming to terms with the impact of their health or physical condition, I'd like to make this happen.
I'm going to start a register of volunteer counsellors and link them to families who need the emotional support. If you are a parent of a child who could do with some help with this, please use the contact function to get in touch. If you are an appropriately trained and insured counsellor and could offer a few hours each week to support children (remotely at this stage), please send me an email! This is my facebook post on this topic. |

App development
Whilst the funds from cup sales (thank you!) will generate funds to develop outpatient facilities for children, I'd like to ensure that emotional support is offered to children to help them accept the difficult pills to swallow.
I am planning to develop an app that children can engage with which will help us work out what support is necessary and when.

Survey
I'd be grateful if you could please complete this survey (if you are a child who frequently attends hospital, or a parent of a child who does so).
thank you.
